Wide outdoor broom12/25/2023 The standard width is 12 inches or about 30cm. Width And LengthĬheck the width of the broom head. Many homeowners end up driving a nail into the handle to try to secure it, usually without success. This type of connection gets loose quickly especially if you do a lot of yard work. The tip of the handle has threads that screw onto threads on the inside of the bracket.Īvoid brooms where the handle simply sticks into a hole in the broom head. You then attach the handle to the bracket by screwing it in. I love brooms that have a plastic or metal bracket secured onto the broom head with screws. To ensure you are buying a durable and reliable broom, check how the handle is connected to the broom head. Some start with some wobbliness and then separate completely. The biggest problem with garden brooms is the handle separating from the broom head. Aluminium is light but strong, and it doesn’t rust. To make sure it doesn’t make the broom too heavy look for an aluminium handle. A plastic handle is also light, making your cleaning chores less tiring.Ī metal handle is another good choice. Plastic does not rust or rot, and plastic handles don’t snap easily. If you buy a broom with a wooden shaft, be careful not to leave it outside in the garden exposed to the elements.Īnother common problem with wooden shafts is that they break more easily.Ī plastic handle is great alternative. The main downside of a wooden handle is rotting. Most garden brooms comes with a wooden handle or shaft. Next, check the quality and size of the handle. Many homeowners find a broom with wire bristles to be the best for concrete and other hard surfaces. If your garden has a lot of hard landscaping such as pavement, a concrete deck or a long driveway, you may need a stiffer bristled brush especially if you struggle with mould and moss growth. They handle both wet and dry debris with ease. They are the bristles you’ll find on most garden brooms. Bassine bristles are made from the leaf fibres of a palmyra palm tree. How stiff the bristles are depends on the kind of surfaces you’ll be cleaning.įor flower and grass-planted gardens, medium-stiff Bassine bristles are perfect. A soft-bristled broom is more suitable for the porch or indoors. You want a broom with stiff bristles that can easily sweep leaves, twigs and other debris in the yard. Yellow jacket sting12/24/2023 Life is safer and more enjoyable without pests, especially pests like the yellow jacket. If the stung by a yellow jacket is causing a moderate reaction, don’t you fret It can be dealt with at home. If you live in Pittsburgh, consider having the team here at Witt Pest Management service your home or business. The ninth and most important thing you need to know about yellow jackets is that they can be controlled with ongoing pest services. The sting from a yellow jacket can cause anaphylactic shock for some people. This is because they get into these places and build their nests in old furniture, stacked materials, and other unexpected things. If you go into an outbuilding or shed, you might find yourself face to face with a lot of angry yellow jackets. Yellow jackets live in some pretty strange places. When you start mowing your grass, the vibration can set these stinging pests off. Their inclination to build ground nests in the ground makes them dangerous to have on your property. Yellow jackets don't just live in the woods. One of the biggest reason these wasps are such a pain, quite literally, is that they can build their nests in the ground or at the base of trees which makes it easy for someone to accidentally step on a nest and break it. Yellow jackets can live in the ground. So, it is no fun running into even a small nest of yellow jackets. That means that, not only will they live long after they've stung you, they can sting you several times. Unlike many bees, these wasps don't have a barb on their stinger. They can wait longer than you can hold your breath, especially if you've been running. That is why it is never a good idea to submerge yourself in water to escape yellow jackets. They will even go around obstacles or hover near water and wait. For this reason, they have been known to give chase for several yards. The instinct to protect the nests is strong for this insect. This is the reason yellow jackets are often considered aggressive. This can be even scarier if a nest is cracked open, accidentally giving these stinging pests a whole lot more exits to come out of. If they feel as though their nest is threatened, they will funnel out rapidly and attack. One of the ways social insects work together is by swarming. That means they work together to build their nests and protect those nests. If you have lots of wasps that buzz around your home, casually searching your eaves each year to create a nest for the winter, you may not think wasps are too scary, but there is a big difference between paper wasps and yellow jackets. Yellow jackets are not your normal wasp.Hopefully, it will give you some important insight into these painful pests. We've put together this quick list of why. Look in areas where there may be a nest before reaching your hand in.Īnd always wear your proper PPE in the woods. If you've lived in Pennsylvania for more than a few years, you know what a yellow jacket is. Steer clear of the nests until early morning and kill the nest then – when it is cooler. Call for a medivac helicopter in the outback.Ĭarry BeeBop wasp spray. This person requires immediate medical aid. An extreme amount of venom from 50 or so stings can also be fatal. A second shot may be required while waiting for paramedics.Ģ. If there is an EPI Pen around, use it now. An epinephrine (EPI) shot may be required to save a person from anaphylaxis. A medivac helicopter is recommended if in remote areas. If one or more of these symptoms are observed, call 911 or dispatch for immediate ALS. If stung watch for signs and symptoms: Undue swelling of the extremities and tongue, redness, hives, wheezing, shortness of breath, nausea, blue skin color, drop in blood pressure, and numerous extremely unpleasant things including no breathing. A small percentage (0.05–2%) of the population can have an allergic reaction which could result in anaphylaxis. The dangers of yellow jacket stings are: severe allergic reactions and multiple stings. They will follow the poor person marked for many yards before going back to the nest. And to top it off, they mark you with a chemical which attracts it colleagues to sting you repeatedly. They (yellow Jacket wasps) can/will sting you multiple times. Over 95 percent of stings are from honey bees or yellow jackets The main symptoms are pain and redness Cause of Bee Sting Reactions. A crew hiking single file in the woods may disturb a nest and one person will be identified and stung. Any disturbance may be rewarded with a painful sting. Also watch out at the river and lake edge. As many water sources dry up, they will be hanging around waterway edges. So a peanut butter and bologna sandwich chased down with a coca cola is pretty hard for them to resist. This is why they will be hounding your sandwich eating on the tailgate. They are much more aggressive due to the need to feed meat to their larvae. Late summer and early fall is a nasty time for yellow jackets. Xperia xz premium slow motion12/24/2023 It's a single tray that would eject both the SIM and the memory card, and the phone will restart immediately. There is only one removable bit on the Xperia XZ Premium and that's the nano-SIM and microSD compartment. We did enjoy the way music sounds on these speakers but they are not as loud as we would have liked. Sony claims the new speakers are 41% louder than the Xperia XZ's and well balanced unlike the hybrid solutions found on the iPhone 7, Huawei P10 Plus and the likes. The second speaker of the stereo speaker setup is below the screen. At the far left you can also spot the tiny status LED. Above the impressive 4K display is the first speaker/earpiece, flanked by the selfie camera and a couple of sensors. Now that we are done with all "Mirror, Mirror" questions, we can approach the Xperia XZ Premium from a more practical angle. The 3,230mAh cell is less than what the Z5 Premium had, but we have our fingers crossed for the new Snapdragon 835 to make up for that. What we would have appreciated though is a slightly bigger battery. Sure, the all-glossy surface is a fingerprint nightmare, but for what it lacks in practicality, the Xperia XZ Premium more than makes up for in looks. The phone feels so sturdy as if it's cut out from a single block of aluminum and it feels great in hand. While the Xperia XZ Premium has gained some weight, we don't mind the extra 30g. These distractions are not as prominent on the Pink and Black paintjobs, it is only the Chrome one that's like that. The mirrored front in the XZ Premium reflects all your surroundings, which can be quite distracting when you use the phone as it pulls attention away from the screen. Xperia XZ Premium (right)Įven more questionable is Sony's choice to gloss the front bezels of the Luminous Chrome model - the Z5 Premium had the decency to keep the front all-black. Overall, what the LG G6 and Galaxy S8 shed in bezels, the Sony gained. Sony Xperia XZ Premium in Luminous Chrome There are no caps on any of the ports but the SIM slot. The surface of the facets is double anodized, which makes the finish more durable, and contributes to some light-bending effects. They are flat and diamond-cut along the edge to form a reflecting facet. The top and bottom sides of the chassis are made entirely of metal. Made of plastic, the sides are also better at absorbing shock, which is more practical than premium but we don't mind at all. Sony successfully matched the sides to the front and rear and it's near impossible to spot a gap on the Deepsea Black model. They almost seamlessly transition into the curved polycarbonate sides but it's by no means glass all around. The front and rear are made of flat pieces of Gorilla Glass 5, one of the sturdiest solutions in the market, but they don't wrap around the phone. The Loop Surface design has been polished to perfection this year and the sharp (literally!) contrast of the smooth surface and the metal edges on the top and bottom makes for a great feeling in the hand.ĭon't let the Loop Surface name fool you, though. We spent plenty of time with the phone and the experience has been a pleasure - both handling it and simply looking at it. Are they the space around one of the best screens in business or the worst eyesore for a flagship? Or, if we consider the word “bird” bird is decodable if students know that “IR” says /r/. In the example provided above, the word “them” will be decodable as soon as a student learns that TH says /th/. So for example, if a student has learned that U says /u/ and S says /s/ the word “us” is decodable. There are 7 Steps to a SMARTER Research-Based Instruction Framework (we use the acronym SMARTER to help remember each of the key components!) 1 - Systematic Instruction Sight words (words that need to be learned by sight) can be taught systematicallyĪ decodable word is a word that can be sounded out with a student’s current level of knowledge. Instead, we can use a systematic framework and progression to help build a foundation for future learning while also giving students the knowledge they need to be successful at their current level. Now that said, we don’t need to have students memorize these words. Because they come up so often, it can be helpful to teach students these patterns a little earlier in their instructional journey. This is why sight words are also known as high-frequency words. However, there are many words that students need to know before they get to that level of progression because they come up so frequently. We talked more about this progression over here! When students are learning to read, they should be working through a progression of concepts as they’re learning to “sound out” words. The tricky thing is that students need to be taught a systematic set of rules and patterns to decode words effectively. Sight words are important because students need to have a certain level of automaticity in order to comprehend what they are reading. Basically, they are words we can read automatically without thinking about them. Sight words are words that need to be recognized by “sight” or words that we need to automatically recognize without sounding the word out. So we are jumping in to explain what these words actually are, and what the research says about how we should be teaching them!įirst things first - What are sight words? In reading intervention we hear terms like sight words, high-frequency words, phonetically irregular words, red words, heart words, and so many other variations used every day. Muse starlight instruments12/24/2023 This contradicts our expectations from listening to the previous C section. “Our hopes” section doesn’t drop and in fact builds higher. No new elements are introduced in the first 8 bars but the guitar follows the voice line briefly on “promise not to”, emphasising that line. The tempo lifts to 122.5 and the band digs in for the highest part of the song. This verse serves to prolong the wait before the C section returns at a higher intensity. The guitar line in verse 2 returns slightly modified and an octave lower. The intensity builds halfway through with backing vocals, 8th note synth chords and an 8th note snare pattern to build back up to the B section. The arpeggiator carries on through and a picked guitar comes up similar to that in the 2nd verse, linking the previous sections. The second part of the C section drops the intensity to it’s lowest in the song. There are synth arpeggiators in the background playing 32nd note chords in this part as a texture behind the main guitar The guitars play powerchords with a quick change on the ‘and’ of the fourth beat of every second bar. The drums change to a straight bash rhythm. Interestingly the song goes from the 2nd verse directly to the C section, likely because it would get too boring going to the B section before the C section. This change is not perceived consciously but increases the intensity of the song. The tempo in this section rises 1bpm to 122.5 bpm. There is a key change to the relative minor and a new extended harmony. Muse delivers this in what I term the C section but could equally be called a bridge. C section (8 bars + 24 bars)Īfter a minute and a half of music with little fluctuation a change is due. The line “Let’s conspire to reignite / All the souls that would die just to feel alive” alludes to the explosion in the next section. Adding an element to the second verse is a common device used by songwriters to keep interest in the song. There is however a new picked guitar line outlining the I ii vi IV harmony. Not much new here that we haven’t seen before in the 1st verse. I decided to call this a B section rather than a chorus as it is very similar to the verse in harmony and instrumentation. This is actually the same harmony and instrumentation as the intro but with lyrics. This helps to glue the two parts together. The bass harmony stays the same and the bass and vocal line move in similar motion for much of the verse. The drum beat pattern is lengthened by a factor of two, probably to give variation to the original pattern and to put the focus on the song lyrics and away from the drums (figure 2). Matthew Bellamy enters the verse and the piano drops out. After four bars the piano countermelody, doubled faintly by a glockenspiel or similar instrument. The levels of the snare are raised above the rest of the drum kit and the snare consistently lags slightly behind the 2 and 4 beat to give a laid back feel. The simple snare drum pattern forms a main hook in the song (figure 1). The sequence ends with a plagal cadence further weakening the progression. The progression itself is relatively weak as it avoids the dominant throughout and finishes with a plagal cadence. A distorted bass outlines a harmony of I ii vi IV in B major which will continue for 90 seconds. This indicates the lengths that Muse has gone in preproduction to find the perfect tempo. The song begins with a distorted bass and drums at a tempo of 121.5. In interviews they have said that the song is “a love song about missing someone you love, including family and friends Intro (12 bars) Starlight was written by Matthew Bellamy, the lead singer of Muse after renting a boat to go fishing in bad weather and feeling sick back in their motel. So much so Disney+'s Loki recently poked fun at the trickster's love for blades in its fifth and penultimate episode, which dropped Wednesday morning.
